Trot Queen, Hong Jin Young is our Artist of the Week. If you watch Korean variety shows, you have noticed that Ms. Hong’s fame has skyrocketed over the past two years. Debuting in 2007 with girl group SWAN (Strong Women Achiever, No Spouse–yeah, I know…), Hong Jin Young was a relative unknown for years until her variety show appearances caught producer’s eyes and captured fans hearts.
Jin Young was born in 1985, but is well-known for her aegyo (cuteness). Her big eyes and bright personality makes men swoon as we can see with her ‘We Got Married‘ husband, Nam Goong Min. (Watch ‘We Got Married with English subtitles on Soompi TV.) Incidentally, Nam Goong Min also cameos in her most recent music video for the song ‘Cheer Up’.
Beyond her looks, there’s a reason she’s called “Trot Queen”. Hong Jin Young’s vocals are just beautiful and soothing. Hong Jin Young went solo in 2009 with ‘Love Battery’. The song has proven to have some staying power as she continued to reference it in her variety show appearances & even as a cameo on Nam Goong Min’s recent drama, ‘My Secret Hotel’. Her guest appearances on Running Man and Infinity Challenge also help promote the song and show off her incredible singing skills.
In November 2014, Hong Jin Young released her first mini album, ‘Life Note‘ with the title track, ‘Cheer Up’. ‘Cheer Up’ is a song about the hardships people face with the goal of helping them endure and overcome.
The music video is clearly inspired by the recent hit drama, ‘Misaeng’ and with Hong going with a more traditional Asian trot, evokes several emotions. Okay. I cried. If you’re curious about the lyrics, clicking the ‘CC’ link will bring up English subtitles.
Hope you enjoyed this. See you next week!
